DTPA renal scanning evaluates relative kidney function. To assess the relative function, blood flow and determine any possible obstruction to the kidneys. However, there are many reasons why the scan is performed and you will need to talk to your doctor about this.
- The patient is given an intravenous injection of a radioactive material whilst lying on an imaging bed, scanning begins immediately and continues for 30 mins.
- Lasix (a diuretic) may be administered and images acquired for a further 15 mins if delayed excretion from the kidneys has been demonstrated.
- There are no side effects from the radioactive injection.
