A gastric emptying scan is used to determine the rate at which the stomach empties compared to a normal rate. The scan is used to evaluate a variety of conditions such a mechanical and anatomical obstruction, evaluation of altered function, nausea, vomiting and weight loss. However, there are many reasons why this test is performed and you will need to talk to your doctor about this.
- The patient is asked to eat an egg sandwich which contains a small amount of radioactive material.
- The patient then lies on a scanning bed for 1.5 hrs whilst images of the stomach are acquired.
- There are no side effects from the radioactive sandwich.
