A HIDA or gallbladder scan is used to evaluate the filling and emptying of the gallbladder, along with the function of the biliary system.

The Procedure

  • A radioactive material is injected intravenously while the patient is lying on a scanning bed, imaging is performed for 1 hr.
  • At 1 hr the scan is assessed, the patient may then be given a fatty meal, or an injection of CCK or morphine to further image biliary function.
  • There are no side effects from the radioactive injection.
