An Oesophageal Swallow Scan is used to assess oesophageal function and to determine if atypical chest pain is caused by oesophageal dysfunction. However, there are other reasons why this test is performed and you will need to talk to your doctor about this.
- The patient is asked to lie flat on a scanning bed. The patient is then asked to swallow 10mls of water and images are taken immediately for 2 mins.
- The patient is then asked to sit up with their back against the camera and is given a small spoonful of pudding to swallow and images are taken immediately for 2 mins.
- The water and pudding have a small amount of radioactive material in them which allows us to watch the swallowing process.
- There are no side effects from the radioactive material in the water or pudding.
